An ESKMO antology as a tribute to Robert Sheckley

Сборник, который вы держите в руках - дань памяти замечательному американскому писателю и большому другу нашей страны Роберту Шекли (1928 - 2005). Его книги стали для отечественных фантастов настоящей литературной академией, в которой учат писательскому мастерству, тонкой иронии, безудержной фантазии и особому взгляду на мир. Фантастические рассказы, собранные в эту книгу - не подражание произведениям мэтра. Это своеобразные дипломные работы, созданные писателями, закончившими "академию Шекли". Кроме текстов русскоязычных авторов, в сборник вошли новые рассказы зарубежных мастеров Иэна Уотсона и Роберто Квальи, переданные в дар сборнику в знак уважения к памяти Мастера и Друга.

March 2007. Leading publisher ESKMO releases "Sheckley Academy ", a SF antology in the memory of Robert Sheckley. The 640 big book contains exclusively Russian authors with two exceptions only: Ian Watson and Roberto Quaglia, who have both a story included. On Russian only.

Being published on cyrillic gives an original feeling, at least because you have to re-learn to read your own name: Роберто Квалья (even though a more correct spelling would be Роберто Куалья, but for Russians the first spelling is easier, so that's likely the way I'm getting known in Russia) - then you typically try a search on Google of your own name on cyrillics and with amazement you find out that there are more than 10,000 results...

It's notoriously very cool to say that reality beats imagination, but in the end nobody really believes that. That's bad. Because that's the way things definetively are! And so, how can one go on limiting himself writing science fiction or fantasy when suddenly reality is revealing itself weirder than any science fiction extrapolation? Therefore, I beg your pardon if I've now come out with a book which deals so much with the vulgar world of reality. I promise I won't do it again. On the long term, also the weidest reality ends up becoming boring. But if this argument sounds intriguing for you, I can guarantee that this 500 pages long book may eventually irritate you, dirturb you, eventually shock you, but for sure it will not bore you. Not at all.

"The grave of my beloved", a story by Ian Watson & Roberto Quaglia, gets translated into Italian with the title "Una tomba per la mia amata", and is published on the science fiction magazine Robot.

Incredible, but true: I have been translated into Italian! It may look like a joke, since supposedly I AM Italian. But that's no joke. "The grave of my beloved" a story written on English in collaboration with British writer Ian Watson, has been translated into Italian by Francesco Lato for the Italian SF magazine Robot. Probably, I am one of the few Italian writers (if not the first at all) to have been translated into Italian....

"The grave of my beloved", a story of Ian Watson & Roberto Quaglia, is the closing story of the April 2003 issue of the prestigious American magazine Weird Tales, one of the first SF magazines ever

On the cover the name of Ian Watson appears, but not the one of Roberto Quaglia, although the story is of both authors. A choice which is commercially comprehensible but all the same not exactly elegant from the point of view of style.

"Bread, Butter and Paradoxine" is a book in two parts, the firts one written in 1985 and the second in 1999. The whole work amounts 470 pages, and it has an introduction by the great American science fiction writer Robert Sheckley, which you may read online.

You still can't read Romanian? Hm, that's a pitty. "The Vagabond of Ether" it's a surreal and humouristic SF novel that I wrote in 1990. 130.000 words. This is the Romanian edition, of 1994, which at the time happened to be also quite a good bestseller.
